Abstract

The article deals with standardization in the English language teaching and learning process for future seafarers as potential members of the international crews with their characteristic multilingualism and multiculturalism. The consequences of ineffective onboard communication are examined on the examples of the most large-scale tragedies at sea. The basic minimum of standard professional phrases for effective interaction in emergency situations at sea and aboard a multinational vessel is emphasized. SMCP as a successful IMO project designed for safe navigation by standardizing a working language – Maritime English for multinational crew is analyzed. The results of MARCOM project on the specifics of communication process in a multilingual and multicultural crew are highlighted and interpreted.
