Abstract

Summary. The article given reveals an essence, a psychodynamic meaning of the setting. The notion of setting is viewed as a whole complex of necessary conditions which allow for special psychic and affective relationships between an analyst and a client due to which the process can be set up. The following aspects refer to external frameworks of a psychoanalytical situation: spatial, temporal, financial and conduct aspects. There have been defined changes in understanding what a setting is from Z. Freud’s times until now. The article offers an analysis of the functions performed by the setting: supporting, restricting and framelike. A supporting function is similar but not identical to protecting motherly attitude, consequently, a person under analysis can feel emotional “support” of the analytical setting in the way a child can feel emotional support of his/her mother. A restricting function consists in that the setting embodies psychotherapy rules. It appears as a certain “law” both for an analyst and a psychotherapeutist, thus performing the Father’s role in a symbolic way. In a framelike function the setting determines stability and reliability of an internal space of psychotherapy, i.e. defines the range of impact of external factors on analytical procedure.
