Abstract

The theories of lateralization of mental functions are presented. The basic principle of functional asymmetry of the brain is discussed. The patterns which constitute the functional division of two hemispheres, as well as the patterns which combine the functions of one hemisphere are described. Three different assumptions about correlation between cognitive style (field dependency/ independency) and lateral brain organization are considered. The results of empirical study of the correlations between the profile of lateral brain organization and cognitive styles in adolescence are presented. The features of cognitive style of the individuals with right, left and mixed lateral profiles are described. Additional cognitive features were found in the group of “right hand-left eye -right ear”.
