МЕДИЧНА ГРАМОТНІСТЬ НАСЕЛЕННЯ ТА РОЛЬ МЕДИЧНОЇ ОСВІТИ В ЇЇ ФОРМУВАННІ

In the article the author observes the problem of health literacy of the patients, its influence on the quality of health services, studies the definitions of the concept of health literacy and provides the extended one, analyzes the barriers that can interfere with the process of the development of health literacy, therefore, should be taken into account and overcome by the doctors, starts investigating one of the aspects of good communication skills – plain language that should be used by the doctor to achieve successful health care. It is also suggested to focus the medical students’ attention and interests on plain language skills during their university foreign language course. The article stresses on the right of the patient to receive accurate and reliable information on his personal health issues. The author comes to a conclusion about an extreme need in the availability of two-language (English-Ukrainian) glossary of medical terms accompanied by corresponding plain words. This glossary should be compliant with the university medical curriculum. The author states that plain language promotes easy understanding. It results in a decreased amount of the complaints about the quality of health services, stressful situations, misinterpretations and legal proceedings. Plain language contributes to the development of health literacy, enforces the ability of the patient to take an active position in terms of his medical problems.
