Abstract

Adult education is becoming more important in the life of any modern society. Nevertheless, governmental and policy making bodies do not realize to the full the potential of adult learning, especially the nonformal one. Non-governmental organizations try to change the current situation and promote adult learning on European and national levels. A similar situation can be observed in Ukraine. There are a lot of public non-governmental educational organizations dealing with adult learning. But most of them are newly created. They need to know what directions they should go and what priorities they should have in their activities. The objective of the publication is to investigate the directions in the activity of such an organization in Europe and the legal documents it uses in its activities. It is achieved through analyzing the activity of European Association of Adult Education (EAEA). It is considered the voice of non-formal adult education in Europe. 137 members from 44 countries are its participants; it represents more than 60 million adult learners across Europe. It has been identified 5 main directions of EAEA activities: advocacy work, providing resources, offering information, establishing networks, creating a community. There has also been done a short overview of a new document designed by EAEA “Manifesto for Adult Learning in the 21st Century”, which outlines the advantages of non-formal adult education and the ways of its development. The conclusion has been made that promoting of adult non-formal education can let the public and government organizations know its power to settle the challenges Europe has faced with: migration, unemployment, demographic changes etc. Ukrainian non-government organizations in the field of adult education can establish the priorities in their activity in conformity with the European ones. Further researches can be devoted to the study of the documents which NGOs of adult learning use in their activities.
