STATE OF LEARNING MOTIVATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of learning motivation of university students in the educational process. The process of forming professional and life competencies in higher education institutions is complex. This process is influenced by a large number of factors, including motivation. Motivation is a system of motives or incentives, determinants of a particular activity, and personality behavior. The basis of human motivation is needs. Needs motivate a person to certain actions, form interests, desires, convictions, ambitions, etc. Formation of motivation is the education of the ideals, the creation of a system of values, priorities, acceptable in society, which, in combination with activity, determine the relationship between conscious and actual motives. In the process of forming learning motivation of university students, special attention must be paid to the formation of positive motives: cognitive, professional, motive for success. It is important to diagnose motives for learning and professional activities of students. On the basis of this problem, the main factors influencing learning motivation of the first year students at Poltava State Agrarian Academy, have been studied. The authors did psychological research «Motivation as an integral part of the formation of professional competencies» among the first year university students. This research showed an inadequate level of positive learning motivation of students, a low level of professional and cognitive motivation. The problems of lack student’s learning motivation are considered, and the relationship between student’s learning motivation and the formation of professional competencies is described. Therefore, teachers of higher education institutions should not only transfer knowledge and experience to students, but also motivate them to actively perceive knowledge in educational and cognitive activities, using positive thinking, a situation of success, giving free rein, innovative educational technologies, etc.
